Great article! I'm not convinced Pomodoro provides for huge productivity gains. I think, in the short term, it helps maintain focus, but I find it prohibits 'the groove' that Andy Hunt talks about when you're really focused. The context switch every 25 minutes certainly has a cost, and I wonder if it hinders right-brain activity.

Hi Reborg,

I definitely agree that you need to give yourself time for right-brain activity, but one thing that Andy goes into quite deeply is the idea that our right-brain often comes up with solutions at precisely the wrong time. We'll solve a complex puzzle in the car on the way home from work, or write some complex code while we're asleep.

While planning time to allow your right-brain to have more focus is important, Andy talks about, and I definitely agree, that you need to strive to be continually receptive to the ADD-like nature of right-brain thoughts, if you want to encourage them to blossom.

Thanks for your feedback; it's much appreciated!

Hi Kevin,

while reading Andy's book I had just the opposite thought. When I read about the importance of left brain thinking and why it is productive to shut down sometimes our chatty right side, I thought: that's what the breaks are for! In my working day there used to be usually no conscious space for left brain thinking, but now thanks to importance of breaks in the Pomodoro Technique that space is not only available but planned. Anyway, appreciated the good points in your article. Cheers, Renzo.

dope, good article man. To those who use ruby you should `gem install pomo` as well for a command-line pomodoro program :D
